Unit Goals
I currently have two ideas for a possible culminating assessment for this unit.
- Introduce students to the field of anthropology, the major contributions of anthropologists, the major schools of thoughts in the field, the different areas and research methods in the field of anthropology.
- Get students to understand the way culture shapes human behaviour (rites of passage, traditions, socialization, etc.) and how culture is shaped by various factors including human behaviour (globalization, immigration, physical environment, etc.).
- Have students apply their knowledge of research and inquiry skills.
- I can compare different research methods used in anthropology as well as their benefits and limitations.
- I can identify the values, beliefs and practices of a given culture.
- I can explain how culture influences human behaviour.
- I can identify various factors that influence and shape human behaviour and culture (multiculturalism, technology, globalization, environment, etc.).
- I can formulate a research question to guide my research.
- I can locate, select and review sources (primary or secondary) relevant to my research.
- I can organize and analyse the information from my sources to synthesize my findings.
- I can analyze my results.
- I can document all sources of information using the APA format.
- I can reflect on findings and research process.
I currently have two ideas for a possible culminating assessment for this unit.
- I would have students write a literature review on research done on a culture of their choice. The idea is to have students consult different types of anthropological research and summarize and synthesize their findings while commenting on some possible limitations of the studies they found (Was there any information missing that you still have questions about? Could the researchers have benefited from a different method research?)
- Alternatively, I would have students conduct their own ethnography on the culture that exists at school. They would attempt to identify cultural practices, values and beliefs at their school including the type of language used, rituals and rites of passage. Students would also be asked to reflect on their research methods commenting on their benefits and limitations.
- Students will pick one field of Anthropology to research: Archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology or linguistic anthropology.
- Students begin with questions about a topic that interests them in that field and that has an impact on many people. The questions should have the potential to be answered through investigation. A central research question will be chosen with teacher consultation.
- Students will take notes about what they already know about their topic and consider what research they have previously learned. Students will develop a hypothesis for their research question.
- Students will use different methods to gather information on their chosen topic. They will select the methods that will provide the most relevant information to confirm their hypothesis. Examples: surveys, experiments, interviews, etc.
- Students will organize their data into charts, graphs, or another format that best communicates their main ideas. They can choose how to present their findings: powerpoint presentation, essay or visual presentation on a presentation board.
- Self Evaluation: Students will reflect and evaluate their research process and results. They will identify the rewards and challenges that emerged when conducting research to investigate their central question.
