This artifact from the Ontario Curriculum not only explains the expectations for the program, but also gives teachers resource and strategies to engage ELLs in the classroom. It also outlines ways to assist ESL and ELL students in the transition from elementary to secondary school, and from the ESL program to mainstream English classes. I have included this artifact for it enlightened me to different factors that help students gain success in acquiring a second language. As a teacher in the secondary stream it will be a great reference to have on hand in any teaching environment. On pages 38-48 there are a multitude of strategies for teachers to ensure quality support is present in the classroom. I will definitely use some of these strategies in my classes in the future, such as information-gap communication games of which I was unaware of before reading this. This is important in the context of working with ELLs because regardless of the course I am teaching-- in the ESL department or English department, it gives me perspective and strategies to utilize with my students. I will refer to it to better understand my students and the different circumstances they are bringing to their learning, as well as to better help them though different instruction approaches outlined here. ![]()

This artifact is a chart reflecting what I know, want to know, and have learned about teaching English Language Learning students in my initial days in this course. I selected this artifact because it demonstrates my interest in teaching English Language Learners and how much I still have to learn. In the know column, I drew on past experiences teaching in the high schools, middle schools and tutoring a wide range of ages. Specifically, in my time volunteering in the high school student success department, I had the opportunity to tutor international students and help them with English literacy. However, I am hoping that the duration of this course will help me answer many of my "want to know" questions. I want to tailor my knowledge to students in the secondary stream and continue to reflect on these questions as I gain more insight. I was able to learn a lot already in this module based on researching on my own, reading peer discussions and in examining the course materials. This chart is important in the context of working with ELLs as it shows my current understanding of how to be an effective educator. I hope that by the end of this course I can reflect back on this chart and be able to answer all of my questions, add to my learning and even critically analyze what I thought I knew.
