To create a classroom climate that fosters care, respect, trust, and integrity there are many things that we as educators must do. We can do simple tasks such as greeting our students at the door daily to examine how they are doing and if they need more support today. We can create pro-active, co-created classroom expectations so that everyone understands what the acceptable behaviours are in the classroom to create an inclusive space for learning. Because the Social Sciences can deal with heavy topics and -isms, we should also create a discussion contract of how to conduct ourselves during these debates and in learning new, or potentially triggering topics. We can have visuals in the room to show it is a safe space - LGBT+ flags, differently abled symbols, and classroom libraries that are representative of the students in our classroom. I also beleive in the importance of creating positive relationships before applying academic pressure, so having the first day or so to set the tone of collaboration. We can learn about our students best this way and help them on their educational journey in a more equitable way. For us as educators, we can provide opportunities for ongoing feedback throughout the lessons, through differentiation, and student led inquiry projects.
